Goodbye to '10, hello '11. What a huge year we have coming and it's already started with a bang!! Rewind a bit to the end of last year and we had a great christmas - I'm sure everyone else did as well. It was lucky that Christmas fell on a Saturday last year so I didn't have to work. We spent the morning talking to everyone on Skype, went to Anthony's for the afternoon, then to Aki's family home for the evening. Lot's of good food and Joshua got spoilt rotton!!
The New Year holiday was pretty quiet. It was too damn cold to go out but we had friends over for food and drinks and started to get ready for our holiday!
We left Yokohama at midnight when it was about 2 degrees and arrived in Bangkok at 6am where it was about 28 degrees!! Josh was a bit difficult on the airplane but we made it and Brad met us at the airport soon after. We took the taxi to his place and it was amazing to get our first glimpse of Thai life - bustling street stalls and markets at 6 in the morning, motorbikes driving the wrong way down the road, and a general sense that this was very different to Japan!!!
Friday - After a couple of hours sleep after our sleepless flight, we settled into Brad and Colleens apartment and acclimatised to the beautiful weather. In the afternoon we went to a nearby lake to do some kneeboarding (I know I can't wakeboard so didn't bother trying). The lake had ropes that went around a rectangular course of suspended wires, so you just held the handle and went for a ride. My first attempt ended in me crashing very quickly. Second time I stayed on for the first straight but bailed on the first corner. Next time I got halfway round, then finally I did a whole lap and called it a day. That evening we noticed Josh had a bit of a fever but he was still very happy, so hoped it would go away overnight. We also enjoyed a Thai massage - it was my first ever real massage and it was amazing!!
Saturday - We relaxed in the morning then went out to see Aki's friend who lives in Bangkok. Joshua's fever got really high during the night but he seemed to get better in the morning. Unfortunately, while we were out for lunch his fever rose again so we took him to the hospital (which required a detour back to Brad's to get more money). He got some medicine and the doctor said not to worry. That evening we enjoyed eating Thai, drinking and playing Yahtzee. When we ran out of beer, me and Brad jumped on the bike to get more. This was fun as we got to drive the wrong way down the road on the way back! We also encountered a Thai man who was full of questions (and whiskey) as we drove back!
Sunday - Joshua woke up full of beans (in a good way). We took a taxi, then boat to Khao San Road where we enjoyed the very cheap shopping. We went back home for another evening of the same (good food, drinks and games).
Monday - We left early in the morning to go to Koh Samet (about 2 hours away). We stayed in a nice resort right next to the beach. It was great to lie in the sun and go swimming. Josh loved the water.
Tuesday - Joshua's 2nd birthday!! Another day on the beach. In the evening we walked to the other side of the island to watch an epic sunset. We enjoyed Joshua's birthday dinner on the beach!
Wednesday - Back to Bangkok for our last day. Josh stayed with Brad while me and Aki did our last shopping at MBK. One last night of massage (for Aki), Thai food, beers and games.
Thursday - Packed our bags and off we went. The flight back was tough again as Josh screamed a lot. Must be his age, coz when we went to NZ (8 months) and Saipan (18 months) he was fine. It was freezing when we got back but we had a great time with a lot of great memories!
(This was the 4th country that Brad and I have met. After first meeting each other in Australia in 2001, we have run into each other in NZ - 2003/4, Japan - 2007/8, and now Thailand - 2011.....Canada next?)

While Josh had his 2nd birthday in Thailand, we had celebrations the week we got back. He was so happy to get presents and eat cake!
We were happy to hear that our new niece, Kaelyn, arrived in the World on January 15th. Well done to Steve and Roshanna. We can't wait to see her!
And some unfortunate news - Aki took a spill and broke her elbow last week! She's okay (as can be), but basically can't do anything for the next 6-8 weeks. this will keep me very busy juggling the house chores, taking care of Josh and working. Luckily my work has a creche ;)
Next update will be when the weather is warmer so I'll have some photoes to post!
